SALTWATER JERKS · 10 GUIDES
Salt water finds every weak link. A knot that holds on a largemouth slips on a redfish run, mono gets bitten through by anything with teeth, and a reel that never sees a rinse is a paperweight by next season. Most of saltwater tackle is just deciding which weak link you are going to fix first.
These are the saltwater guides in the Field Journal, sorted by the job they do. The table is the short version; each row links to the full guide with the why and the setup. For the gear itself, browse inshore and offshore.
| THE JOB | WHAT MATTERS | WHERE TO START |
|---|---|---|
| Joining braid to a leader | Leader tension, alternating wraps and a slow cinch, or it slips. | FG knot |
| A faster line-to-line join | Braid gets more wraps; wet it and cinch so neither side slips. | Double uni |
| A knot set for redfish runs | Which knot for which connection, inshore and offshore. | FG, uni-to-uni, and a snell for circle hooks |
| Fish with teeth | Bite-offs, and when wire beats fluorocarbon. | AFW Surflon nylon-coated 1x7 wire |
| Circle hooks | A hookset jerk pulls the hook; some fisheries require circle hooks by law. | Lift and reel, never jerk |
| Inshore soft plastics | Snook, redfish, trout and flounder, by color and setup. | Berkley Gulp: Pearl White, Nuclear Chicken, New Penny |
| Speed jigging offshore | A center-balanced fall, jig weight for depth and current, assist hooks. | Daiwa Saltiga SK Jig |
| A saltwater combo on a budget | Five reel sizes, a NyliTech frame, carbon drag rated up to 40 lb. | KastKing ReKon saltwater combo |
| A cheap surf kit | A long-cast reel and a pack that carries the rest. | HAUT TON long-cast reel + WANOON 45 L pack |
| Landing fish and catching bait | Reach, storage and which net does which job. | Telescoping landing net, saltwater cast net |

Braid-to-fluoro leaders, abrasion-heavy structure, fish that will find the one weak wrap in your line. Saltwater knots do not forgive laziness.

The FG knot is the strongest braid-to-fluorocarbon connection a jerkbait angler will regularly tie — slimmer profile than a double uni, cleaner through the guides on a long cast, rated to hold at the full strength of the braid. It is also the knot most often tied wrong.

Braid main line to fluorocarbon leader is the gold-standard jerkbait connection: zero stretch where you need sensitivity, near-invisible fluoro where you need stealth. The double uni is the knot that convinces two completely different materials to stay together, and once you understand what each side is actually doing, you can tie it in the dark.

Nylon-coated 1x7 wire that ties like mono and shrugs off teeth that shred fluorocarbon. Here is why serious inshore and nearshore anglers keep a spool of this in the boat, and how to actually tie a knot in wire without it kinking.

Every technique on this site tells you to jerk. This one is begging you not to. Set a circle hook wrong and you will pull it clean out of the fish’s mouth.

Gulp catches more inshore fish than it should. Understanding the scent delivery system changes how you rig, store, and color-match for snook, redfish, trout, and flounder.

The Saltiga name usually means a four-figure reel. Here it is on a center-balanced speed jig: fast drop, erratic flutter on the fall, and a finish tuna track from fifty feet down. What the balance actually buys you over a cheaper knockoff.

A graphite-blank rod and a carbon-drag reel, sold together for less than most inshore reels cost alone. Here is where the ReKon punches above its price, and where it does not.

You do not need a mortgage to fish the surf. A long-casting reel and a tackle-hauling backpack get you to the sand and back without an elaborate setup.

A landing net, a cast net, and a folding backup: three ways to not lose the fish (or the bait) at the worst possible moment.
