COLD-WATER JERKBAITS · 8 GUIDES
Jerkbait season is cold-water season. From late fall through early spring, a suspending jerkbait hanging dead still in front of a lethargic bass is one of the best baits on the lake. The whole trick is the pause, and the pause is set by the water temperature.
So start with the thermometer. The band chart below is the one our live water-temperature pages use: find your water, find its band, and you have a cadence and a pause length before you make a cast. The guides underneath cover the rest: the pause itself, why fluorocarbon sinks a suspending bait, what F, SP and S on the box mean, and the point where it is simply too cold and something else should be tied on.
EVERY BAND, ONE TABLE
Surface temperature decides how long a jerkbait should sit still. These are the bands we fish by. They're a starting point, not a law: clarity, the last front and the fish themselves get a vote.

Every other lure teaches you to keep reeling. A jerkbait teaches you the opposite: the twitches are just choreography for the pause, and the pause is when almost every strike happens.

That two-letter code after "Vision 110" or "Pointer 100" tells you what your lure does during the pause, the moment fish actually bite. Buy the wrong one and you are fishing the wrong water column every time you stop reeling.

Your SP jerkbait is tuned to hover at neutral buoyancy. Fluorocarbon is denser than water and every foot of leader is actively pulling it down. Here is the physics, the diagnosis, and the two-dollar fix.

Below 45°F, bass metabolism shuts down so completely that even a suspending jerkbait on a 10-second pause is still moving too fast to earn a committed bite. The jerkbait is a reaction-strike tool. Cold fish do not react.

Cold hands, thin line, no room for error. The knots that hold when you are tying them at fifteen degrees with gloves half off.
